5th Annual VI Brownfields Forum - "Paving The Way For Redevelopment"

This year's forum, "Paving The Way For Redevelopment", will bring together a diverse group who are affected by and involved in redevelopment of VI Brownfield from property owners to developers, concerned citizens, government and federal agencies, community leaders, financial and environmental specialists. The event will be held on July 30, 2008, at the Westin Resort, St. John  Topics include:

  • VI Voluntary Clean-Up

Building Safety Week - Division Of Building Permits Celebrates “Building Safety Week"

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Division of Building Permits is celebrating the 28th annual “Building Safety Week” from Monday May 5 through Friday, May 9, 2008. Click here for details.

In brief events include:

  • Monday, May 5, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Opening ceremony at the Florence Williams Library on St. Croix. Local safety and inspection experts will be guest speakers.

  • Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. - Comprehensive presentation on Building permits and building safety in our community will be given to students at St. Croix Career and Technical Education Center.

  • Wednesday, May 7, 2008 - Director Maureen Burke-Ventura and staff will appear on the Sam Topp Talk Show to discuss Building Safety issues.

  • Thursday, May 8, 2008 - Inspection agency Krause Manning and Permits staff will take Charlotte Amalie students on a tour of the Marriot Frenchmen’s Cove construction site at different stages of development.

  • Friday, May 9, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. - The Division of Permits in conjunction with Home Depot will have an educational outreach from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the stores premises. Brochures and literature on building safety and fire prevention tips for homes and families, tips on mold prevention and control, and the benefits of building permits will be on hand.

Seminars - Virgin Islands Energy Office to Hold Transportation Seminars

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources announces that the Virgin Islands Energy Office will hold two seminars on the efficient use of transportation vehicles.   The seminars will be held on Tuesday, October 23rd and Tuesday, October 30th at the Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority building in Frenchtown at 6 p.m.  The seminars will offer tips to increase gas mileage, such as efficient driving techniques and regular car maintenance.  “As the price of gasoline steadily rises, we expect more residents to be interested in getting as much information as possible on how to efficiently use their energy resources,” said Energy Operations Coordinator, Joseph Daniel.  For more information call Daniel at 774-3320.

Public Meeting - Clean Water Act Section 319(H) Grant

Acting Commissioner Claudette C. Lewis is pleased to announce that for Fiscal Year 2007, federal grant monies are available under Section 319(h) of the Clean Water Act for government agencies and nonprofit organizations to address non-point sources of pollution in the territory. Two public meetings are scheduled to explain the grant application process, January 31, 2007 (St. Croix) and February 2, 2007 (St. Thomas).  Click for additional information.

Seminars - DPNR Hosts 3rd Annual Brownfields Forum

The Division of Environmental Protection will host the 3rd Annual Virgin Islands Brownfields Forum on Thursday September 14th, 2006 at the Carambola Beach Resort on St. Croix.  The forum themed "Redevelopment: Opportunities in Reuse" is designed to teach property owners, the real estate community, financiers, developers and other interested parties how contaminated and unwanted properties can be revitalized.  Click here for details.
