Air Pollution:

Dirty air that could injure human health or property, or animal life, and/or prevent normal use and enjoyment of property.

 

Air Quality Standard:

The allowable amount of an air contaminant in outside air

 

Air Toxics:

Chemicals that are know to or suspected of causing cancer or other serious health effects, including damage to the respiratory or nervous systems, birth defects and reproductive problems.

 

Ambient Air:

Outdoor air.

 

Attainment Area:

a geographic site that meets clean air quality standards.

Bact:

Best Available Control Technology to reduce specific air pollutants.

Cfr:

Code of Federal Regulations.  Publication containing federal regulations.  EPA regulations are in Title 40 (40 CFR). These can be found at law libraries and some public libraries. 

 

Compliance:

Observing and accepting all the DPNR and federal environmental rules and regulations.

 

Containment:

An element that soils the air.

Emission Inventory:

A list of air pollutant sources and the amounts emitted into a community’s air.

 

Emission Standard:

The greatest amount of a pollutant that can be discharged from a single source.

 

Emission:

A routine discharge or release of pollutants into the air.

Facility:

A specific structure, device, item, equipment, or enclosure that is and/or contains a stationary source.

 

For A Non-Attainment Area

Ozone emission tons are less in those countries designated as non-attainment by EPA’s classification schedule.

 

For An Attainment Area

Any facility or stationary source which emits, or can emit, 100 tons per year or more of any air contaminant.

 

Fugitive Dust:

Particulate matter suspended in the air by wind action and human activities.

Gact:

Generally Available Control Technology to reduce specific air pollutants.

 

Ground Level Ozone:

Produced by the combination of pollutants from many sources, including smokestacks, cars, paints, and solvents, in the presence of heat and sunlight.

Mact:

Maximum Achievable Control Technology to reduce specific air pollutants.

 

Major Source:

For all areas - Ten ton of any hazardous air pollutants

 

Monitoring:

Air samples taken by local, state, and regional agencies to measure air pollutants.

Non-Attainment Area:

A geographic area where the air pollutants exceeds air quality standards.

Small Business:

Is a business that is independently owned and operated concern that is not dominant in its field. The business must be owned by a person who employs 100 or fewer employees, and cannot be a major stationary source.
