The Virgin
Islands Geospatial Information Council (VIGIC) established by
Executive Order No. 428-2006, has scheduled its Fourth Annual GIS
Conference. This year's themed: "Regional and Local
Integration of GIS Technology through Business and Intergovernmental
Collaboration" is designed to promote the
expansion of internal and external spatially related resource
capabilities leading to improved decision making and resource
management.
This year's
conference as past conferences will bring together citizens, public
and private resources managers, GIS related technical experts and
venders, and a host of other equally critical partners. The Fourth
Annual GIS Conference will be held on St. Thomas from November
19-21, 2008. Hotel site and conference information will be forth
coming.
The
support of the Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis, Office of the
Lieutenant Governor, the Government of the Virgin Islands, the
Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) continues to be strategic
partners.
Creating a
forum of experts
from around the Caribbean and Nationally to share their expertise in
government and business integration of GIS in management and service
delivery, use of GIS in Emergency planning, real estate market,
insurance and other areas in building institutional capacities for
advancing GIS systems.
NOAA
Technicians have completed the Height Modernization Project and are
accumulating the data for publishing at the end of the year. It is
critical to a wide range of activities in the US Virgin Islands such
as flood plain mapping, storm water and sewer utility management,
large scale engineering projects, hurricane evacuation and recovery
planning, and topographic mapping. Subsequently, we will be hosting
exhibits and workshops.
As the crises
of global warming continues to astound and baffle people around the
world, we will begin to better understand the role that geospatial
information and technology plays in the larger vision of securing
and safeguarding our environment and critical infrastructure through
GIS as an accountability management tool in building and maintaining
GIS data resources.
Please make
every effort to join us and to bring your recommendations,
expertise, and knowledge so that we can indeed build strong and
effective networks. We look forward to seeing you in November (see
