Vi Public Libraries Receive Prestigious Federal Competitive Grant

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources is pleased to announce that the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums has been selected to receive a prestigious competitive grant of $30,000 in the 2011 Library Services Grant for the Pacific Territories, Freely Associated States, and the Virgin Islands.
 
"With tough economic times and limited budgets, libraries need to find more ways to service the community, this grant will assist us providing great access to a vast array of literary resources for scholarly and educational research, provide learning tools for the youth and encourage literacy in our children through story time centers in each public library", said Ingrid Bough, Territorial Director of Libraries, Archives and Museums.
 
The 4 tiered, multi-faceted grant includes a two year subscription to EBSCO's most robust multidisciplinary: Master File, a database designed for public libraries with close to 2,000 full text publications such as Sports Illustrated, Ebony, Jet, Hispanic, Time, Antiques, and Horticulture with over, 107,000 primary source, and 1,000 reference books.
 
Business Source Elite is a popular business research database, and it includes the full text for more than 1,000 journals. Newspaper Source & trade: provides cover-to-cover full text for 35 national (U.S.) and international newspapers such as USA Today, The Washington Post, TheWashington Times, The Times (London), The Toronto Star, etc. The database also contains selective full text for 375 regional (U.S.) newspapers and full text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, FOX News, NPR, etc.
 
A special feature of the subscription includes Caribbean Search the worlds most comprehensive research database covering the Caribbean Region. This database features more than 200,000 records with full text for more than 80 journals and magazines, over 500 full text books and additional content ranging from economic and country reports to conference papers to Caribbean newspapers. Samples of the full text journals include:
 
Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies; Caribbean Quarterly; Caribbean Review of Books; Caribbean Journal of History; Jamaica Journal; Journal of Latin America and Caribbean Anthropology; Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies; Journal of West Indian Literature; Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies; Latin Trade (in both Spanish and English); Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages; Caribbean Beat and much more.
 
All of the databases will be available through the public libraries' OPAC system and a library card is needed for access. Library cards are FREE and available through the public library. Expected availability for the databases through the division's website is December 1, 2011.
 
Also currently available and included in the grant is an extension of access to the online collection of eBooks by Tumble Books Library. TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of eBooks animated, talking picture books from K-5 and 6-12 which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love.
 
In addition, each public library will receive Scholastic Cozy Corner - Cozy Corner, an innovative early language and literacy created and designed to enhance the Story time experience for young learners, ages 2-to-4, through 10 Story time theme packs, which contain a big book, read-aloud books, music, character cards and detailed Story time plans to help kids connect with the books, and support topic-rich conversations in English and Spanish.
 
Finally, students who visit the public library will be able to have access to HighSmith.Com media center whereby they will be able to check out the CD-Rom tools on How to write a book report. Also, learn from an interactive CD-ROM program entitled Mrs. Murphy's media center that provides the right level of encouragement as children learn about the most common media center resources to assist in their educational development.
